Quarterly Update
Overall, global equities rose over the quarter. While economic growth continues to be low, investors were encouraged by continuing accommodative monetary policies in both developed and developing countries, and they continued to take advantage of attractive equity valuations. Investors also breathed a collective sigh of relief as the risk of a euro zone breakup seemed to recede when leaders put forward a banking union proposal and restructured the terms of Greece’s bailout loans. In Asia, China showed signs that its economic slowdown may have bottomed, and Japanese equities posted positive returns as investors speculated that the newly elected government would encourage the Bank of Japan to further stimulate the economy. The Canadian dollar weakened against most major currencies, except the Japanese yen. This weakness led to enhanced returns in Canadian dollar terms.
