Portfolio Update
Quarterly Update
Canadian bonds posted modest positive returns for the quarter. Both government and corporate bonds gained, with corporates outperforming their government counterparts. Over the quarter, government yields rose slightly while corporate yields declined, narrowing spreads. Nonetheless, corporate bonds continue to offer a yield advantage. Canadian equities also generated modestly positive returns for the quarter, with the S&P/TSX Index rising 1.7 percent. Eight of the Index’s ten sectors rose over the quarter, led by consumer staples, information technology and industrials. While China showed signs that its economic slowdown may have bottomed - which would be positive for Canadian commodities - and U.S. housing and employment data both showed improvement, investors were distracted by fiscal cliff developments.
